Toponymy
The name of the commune would result from the Latin word Palatolium meaning small palace, in reference to the small royal castle which Childebert Ier had.
History
Origins
The history of Palaiseau begins with construction for Childebert Ier from a small castle, called palatolium in Latin, who gave his name to the place. Later, the queen Bathilde, wife of the king Clovis II settled there with her son, Clotaire. She was in the beginning, with the monk Saint Wandrille, of an abbey near the castle. The existence of the site is attested starting from the July 25th 754, date on which Pépin the Brief made gift of the field of Palaiseau and its dependences to the Abbaye of Saint-Germain-of-Meadows. This ground then extended on the current communes from Palaiseau, Orsay, Bore-hole-on-Yvette, Gif-sur-Yvette, Saint-Rémy-the-Chevreuse, Saclay, Vauhallan and Villebon-sur-Yvette. Important taxes were to then be versed with the abbey.
Palaiseau, shared field
In 950, the field was yielded to Guerin says “the Old man”, first laic lord, vassal of king de France. But towards the Year millet, and until the reign of Philippe-Auguste, the field was burst between nearly 10 lords. In 1099, one of them, the knight Gontran of Lozere covered glory at the time of the taken of Moslem Jerusalem by égorgeant more than one hundred . Of return it yielded its stronghold of the place says Fourcherolle to the Bertrand abbot. In 1262, the lord of Palaiseau died, holy Louis gave his Jeanne daughter in marriage to the Brown one, which became lord of Palaiseau. This family remained on the field until the 15th century, date on which Jacques the Brown one died without descent. The seigniory was then transmitted to his/her sister, another Jeanne, marries knight Guillaume II of Harville. This last was killed in 1415 with the Bataille of Azincourt. His/her son being too young, the field without chief fell in 1417 in front of the attacks from Jean without Peur, like the castles of Montlhéry, Marcoussis and Dourdan. The city was then entrusted by Henri V to the garrison of Montlhéry. In 1430, Thomas Burcho, rider English was made lord of Palaiseau. In 1436, Guillaume III of Harville recovered the stronghold of Palaiseau. The family remained established until the 18th century.
At the 17th century, Louis XIII set up the field in Marquisat to reward Anne-Antoine for Harville, which was Gouverneur of Calais of 1622 with 1627. In 1652, the city was struck by the Peste. In 1701, François de Harville died and the field returned to his/her son-in-law, Nicolas-Simon Arnauld de Pomponne, wire of the diplomat and minister Simon Arnauld de Pomponne. The 1758, the seigniory and chastellenie was sold to the king Louis XV and in 1760, Miss de Sens exchanged with the king the seigniory of Palaiseau against that of the Charollais, but she died in 1765. The seigniory thus returned to his/her half-brother, the prince Louis-Joseph de Condé. It had Palaiseau, its castle and its field until the Révolution. It is him which engaged the father of Joseph Bara as gamekeeper. In 1714, the priest Joseph Lambert opened the first institution of free instruction for boy with Palaiseau.
The Révolution made its office, the January 24th 1790, the local assembly was elected, the prince Louis-Joseph de Condé was the last lord of Palaiseau. The November 14th 1790, second election of the local assembly. First great decision of this assembly, in 1805, the constitution of a body of firemen. In 1815, Palaiseau became famous with a representation with the Théâtre of the Door Saint Martin's day of the part “ the Magpie Robber or the Maidservant of Palaiseau ” written by Laigniez and D' Aubigny. The XIXe century, rise
In 1845 began construction from the Ligne of Seals, inaugurated the June 23rd 1846. The July 29th 1854, it was prolonged until Orsay, and amalgamated with the Compagnie of Orleans. Palaiseau which was for a long time a relay of Poste on the road of Chartres to Paris quickly became accessible by the Parisian ones thanks to its three stations: Palaiseau, Palaiseau-Villebon and Lozere. Initially writers (Georges Sand, Alexandre Dumas Wire, Charles Péguy…) then anonymities built rich person residences on the slopes or in the valley. In 1870, Palaiseau accommodated a factory with gas coal which replaced the public lighting with oil installed in 1843. But the September 18th 1870, Palaiseau was occupied by 35.000 Prussian, they left the commune only the May 14th 1871. This episode decided the État-major to protect the capital by fortified towns. Palaiseau, by its dominant situation on the valley of the Yvette was selected. A Extremely and two batteries were built on the heights in 1879.
In 1880, the city became crossroads of communication. To the line of Seals was added the Ligne of Large Belt of which the Gare of Massy - Palaiseau was inaugurated on May 1st 1880. The September 11th 1881, the sculptor Albert Lefeuvre offered to the commune a sculpture representing the “adoptive” hero of the commune, Joseph Bara. Nevertheless, it takes part with the legend by representing it a saber in the hand, whereas the young man was only Tambour in the 8th regiment of hussards…
In 1913, the commune passed to electric lighting with a concession granted to South-Light. But again the Great War ravaged the city. More especially as in February 1917, the explosion of the factory of ammunition Rent located close to the Station of Massy - Palaiseau started a small cataclysm in all the valley. In 1922, the city continued its rise with the opening of the establishments Despreux Frères, which became later the Société of Manufacture of Measuring instruments. In 1932 opened a hospital-old people's home. In 1937, to the gendarmerie was added a police station of Police.
The war touched once again Palaiseau, occupied by the German which established a Kommandantur and stationed two Bataillon S of the Wehrmacht and the S with the Château of Villebon-sur-Yvette. It was released only the August 24th 1944 by the Division Leclerc.
Since, Palaiseau which belonged to the Red Banlieue a long time of Paris continued its rise to become the principal pole of the North-West essonnien. In 1948, it became principal Center of help against the fire, in 1962 Sous-préfecture of the department of Seine-et-Oise, then in 1968 of the Département of the Essonne. In 1976, the Polytechnic school was installed on the territory of the commune, followed by ENSTA and ONERA. The districts of Pileu, of the Wild rabbits were parcelled out, of the great units were built and of the utility services added to meet the new needs for the palaisiens.
