Pajonal

The Pajonal is a Stratovolcan extinguishes today, located in Argentine, in the province of Catamarca, Département of Antofagasta of the Sierra, with the latitude of 25° 29,8′ south, and the longitude of 68° 19,2′ west.

In Argentina and Uruguay, the word pajonal means area roofed-in with straw (paja), easily flooded and wet .

One should not confuse Argentinian Pajonal with the volcano Pajonales, located more at north in territory Chile in, close to the volcanos Salín and Pular.

Description

Pajonal is located at seven kilometers in the south-south-west of its neighbor, the Abra Grande (5  391 meters), with which it forms an important volcanic complex. This complex is in fact the edge is and southern of an old crater much vaster, old a Caldeira whose edges north and west crumbled. At this place, in the North-West, one can see the Bullfight del Pajonal a broad surface covered with volcanic materials.

Pajonal jointly with Abra Grande emitted true rivers of lava noirâtre which one clearly distinguishes on the photographs taken by satellite. The most spectacular casting is an enormous black river directed towards the south then south-west. Casting is long, and broad on average, and 20 kilometers 2 kilometers extends until the salar called Salina Aguas Calientes .

In the North-West with a few 25 kilometers hardly, is the Cordón del Azufre.

In south-east the Antofalla (6  409 meters) is drawn up to forty kilometers to the east-south-east. The volcanos Lila and Cerro Cajeros (5  725 meters), close to Antofalla, are them to some 22 and 35 kilometers in south-east also.

Tourism - exploration

Abra Grande is located in a desert and quasi uninhabited region; the drinking water is a very rare food product there. It is the case of all the area, which one of is moved back and the most isolated from Argentine. There is no road and tourism is reserved for those which are attracted by the adventure.
