Painting of History

The Painting of History , or historical painting , is a pictorial Genre which takes as a starting point scenes resulting from the Christian history, of the ancient history (Mésopotamienne, Egyptienne, Greek, Romaine,…), of the Mythology or recent historical events.

In 1667, it was regarded by André Félibien (historiographer, architect and theorist of the Classicisme French) as the major kind of the Peinture in the Hiérarchie of the kinds but this " primeure" attenuated, at the end of the 18th century and during the 19th century with " breathlessness of the classicisme" , with the profit of other kinds such as the Portrait, the scenes of kind and the landscape.

It consists of the representation of subjects religious, mythological, historical, allegorical or resulting from the Littérature and underlies a interpretation life or expresses a moral message or intellectual.

The gods and goddesses of old mythology represent various aspects of the human Psychisme, the religious figures represent Idées, precepts and sources of inspiration, of some kind which it are, are pretexts with an expression Dialectique or Satirique of the subject.

Frequently, and in particular during the development of the Neoclassicism, since the French revolution and during the XIXe century, the painting of History concentrated on the representation of heroes, generally male, naked or undressed.

At the 19th century, the painting of history lived one transitional period during which many artists copied old styles or historical artists. At the end of this century, this historicism led to the qualified style of fireman and, in reaction, with the birth of the Art nouveau.
