Painter of the navy
In France, the title of Peintre of the Navy is granted by the Minister for defense to artists having devoted their talent to the sea, the Navy and the sailors. It can be allotted not only to painters but also to photographers, illustrators, engravers and sculptors.
Rights and preferences
The title does not grant right to any remuneration but grants certain facilities and privileges:- possibility of embarking on buildings of the National marine;
- port of a uniform;
- the signature of the artist on his works is followed of an anchor of marine;
- membership of the Historical Service of the Navy.
The approved painters are named for three years by a jury chaired by an officer general of Navy and consisted of naval officers and titular painters . To become titular painter, it is necessary to have been approved painter more than four consecutive times.
History
The Monarchy of July inaugurates the inscription of the Painters of the Navy to the Directory in 1830 with Crepin (1722-1851) and Gudin (1802-1880). This tradition will be maintained until 1962.A directory of the Navy devoted in 1830 Gudin and Crepin first painters of the department of the Navy to carry a permanent official title, the body grows rich into 1849 by Lepoidevin, into 1854 of Morel-Fatio. So much of artists familiar of the Living rooms remained apart from the official list like Isabey, Mozin, Gilbert or Courdouan, and after almost a half century during which three painters only were named, the body of the painters of the Navy inflated of eleven names in the decade 1880, then of five in 1890, and five others the following year. In the years 1930, Delpy, Sailor-Marie, Chain and Brenet animated brilliant promotions which made the reputation of the new French school of maritime painting.
The body of the Painters of the Navy perdure since nearly two centuries. They have also the feeling to prolong the university of painting of the seaside and the marine ciels which was impressionism, and they are honoured to have counted in their rows Marquet, Ziem, Signac and Gillot. In 1860, there exist four painters at the Department of the Navy of which Morel-Fatio; in 1900, they are thirty-two. In 1914, they are fifty and one.
It will have to be waited until 1920 so that a decree gives statute to the Painters of the Navy: the title of " Painter of the Department of Marine" is granted by the Minister for one 5 years renewable period to artists having devoted their talent to the study of the sea, the Navy and sailors. This title does not give right any remuneration but only facilities to achieve missions in the ports and on the ships as well as faculty to add an anchor to their signature. In 1924, a new decree comes to amend this: the number of the Painters of the Navy is limited to 20 and it title is conferred for one 3 years period. A biannual living room is instituted. Lastly, the decree of March 1953 alters the statute of the Painter of the Navy. It is a decree of April 2nd, 1981, which regulates today the definition and the attribution of the title of " Painter of Marine".
