Pacta conventa (Croatia)

The Pacta conventa is an imposed treaty, in 1102, by the king Coloman of Hungary to noble Croatian brought together on the Drave.

By this pact, the noble ones representing the twelve principal Croatian tribes recognized Coloman as legitimate king of Croatia and Dalmatie. The kingdom, thus, was associated with the crown of Hungary by a " union personnelle" , through the person of the king. He was controlled, actually, by a Ban (viceroy) representing the king.

Croatia preserved its Sabor (diet), its army, the old privileges of the Croatian nobility and the statutes of the Dalmatian cities. On the other hand, it lost its fleet and had to the king to answer his calls to the weapons.

This treaty - whose authenticity was disputed by certain historians - was worth during eight centuries like basic legal charter in the relations between Croatia and Hungary.
