Pact of Wilno

The Pacte of Wilno is an agreement concluded the November 28th 1561 between the Ordre from the Knights Carry-Sword and the king de Pologne Sigismond II Auguste.

Converted with the Lutheranism, Gotthard Kettler, fiftieth and last large-Master about the Knights Carry-Sword (a branch of old the Order Teutonique), secularizes his monk-soldiers and puts himself officially under the protection of the king of Poland to prevent an aggression of the Moscovie. This pact gives to Poland the estuary Western Dvina, the town of Riga and other ports Baltic. The Livonie is built-in the kingdom of Poland (until in 1621) as well as the Courlande and the Sémigalie (until in 1775).

Gotthard Kettler becomes the hereditary duke of Courlande, Vassal of Sigismond II Auguste. The remainder of the country is placed under Lithuanian administration .

This Pact is at the origin of the Guerre of North the Seven Years (1563-1570).
