Pacman (Arch Linux)

Pacman (contraction of package-manager ) is the official Gestionnaire of packages of the Distribution Linux Arch Linux. The current version is the 3.0.4 (exit the May 13rd 2007).

Pacman uses files .tar .gz for all the packages. Each one of these packages contains a binary compiled for architecture I686. Pacman is also able to solve the dependences and to download then automatically to install the packages necessary.

Pacman is an extremely powerful manager of packages and is very easy to use. It respects the philosophy of Arch Linux which is to have the maximum of control and configurability while remaining simple. In theory, it is necessary only to type " pacman - Syu" regularly to preserve an up to date system all the time. Compared with RPM, pacman is very simple.

Since version 3, pacman is presented in the form of a library libalpm (Arch Linux Package Management) to which is associated a user interface (in line of order by defect). In addition to a partial remelting of the code bringing a profit speed, the purpose of this evolution is to simplify the later developments of pacman as well as possible alternative interfaces.
