The paca ( Agouti paca ) is a large Rongeur that one meets in America tropical and subtropical since the south-east of the Mexico until the Paraguay. It is known in Mexico under the name of tepescuintle or tepescuincle of the Nahuatl tepeitzcuintli which means “dog of hill literally” ( tepetl : mount, mountain, hill; itzcuintli : dog).
Description
The body of the paca , halep , majaz or lapa measurement between 60 and 80 cm length, the tail has 2 or 3 cm. It weighs between 7 and 12 kg. It is covered with a brownish or orange fur, with round white spots.
Lifestyle
He lives near the rivers of the tropical forests, since the Mexico until the Paraguay, with less than 2.000 meters of altitude. He has night practices. Excel swimmer, it feeds from various plants (tubers, rhizomes, sheets, seeds and fruits). He spends the day in his burrow built with multiple exits dissimulated by the foliage.
He is unfortunately the object of hunting, because its flesh is very tasty. The unspecified massacre, associated with the destruction of its environment, threatens its survival as a species quite simply.
