PSA Peugeot Citroen

PSA Peugeot Citroen is a deprived Car manufacturer French, property of the Famille Peugeot which controls the automobile marks Peugeot and Citroen. The group is the 2nd European manufacturer , behind the German group Volkswagen AG.

History

PSA ( Peugeot SA ) is founded in 1965 to form the holding of the automobile group of the same name. They are in fact a legal transfer the Société the Cars Peugeot which becomes PSA.

The birth of PSA Peugeot Citroen intervenes in 1976, when Peugeot SA amalgamates with Citroen SA (it is actually about an absorption of the second by the first). Since as well at Peugeot as at Citroen, with its business successes (GS and CX), finances were managed carefully, company PSA carried out good performances of 1976 with 1979.

In 1979, PSA bought the out-of-date capital of Chrysler - Europe (Simca) for the low-costs symbolic system of USD $1, which led to losses for PSA between 1980 and 1985 (Rootes with the the United Kingdom and Barreiros in Spain). As from July 1979, Chrysler Europe takes the name of Talbot. Three marks compose the French group then PSA : Peugeot, Talbot and Citroen.

PSA then will develop a synergy between its marks and will develop projects on the same bases, to limit the production costs. It is the case in particular of the Peugeot 104, which will give rise to two derived: the Citroen LN and the Talbot Samba. But the progressive fall of Talbot, a few years later, will put a term at this agreement tri-marks. Synergies are not completely exploited, since two twin models, the Peugeot 106 and the Citroen Saxo have only 40% of joint elements.

Whereas Talbot disappears in France in 1986, the two other marks of the group rectify thanks to the models Peugeot 205 and Citroen BX.

The group will be stabilized thereafter before knowing a new strong growth between 1998 and 2003, in particular thanks to the success of the Peugeot 206, with the engines diesel and an intelligent policy of co-operation.

To reduce the costs of research and production, PSA has carried out for several years of the co-operations targeted with its competitors. Oldest are with Renault (mechanical) since 1966 and FIAT with the subsidiary companies Sevel (utility light) since 1983. It was reinforced with Ford (all the diesel engines), Toyota (small car of line entry), BMW (driving gasoline) and Mitsubishi (4×4). In order to multiply the silhouettes of the vehicles, the group also began in a policy of platforms (bases common to several vehicles): platforms 1,2 and 3.

Years 2004 - 2006

The year 2004 was, according to the two managing directors of Peugeot and Citroen, for the two marks of the group, “suitable” but contrasted. In Europe, where the group had an important programme of launching of new cars, the phenomenon of price war developed, whereas the growth in China is disappointing, because there are too many manufacturers for this market.

In spite of launching in 2005 of the 1007 and the duet Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1, first vehicles produced in co-operation with Toyota with Kolin (Czech Republic), the sales continued to stagnate and the results to drop. In the first half of 2006, the results undergo a fall of more than half, which constrained Jean-Martin Folz announced a plan of economies and its nearest departure. The group chooses Christian Streiff to replace it.

In 2006, the world sales of the group dropped by 0,7%, including 1,960 million for Peugeot (1,8%) and 1,406 million (+0,8%) for Citroen.
