The teams of Nittany Lions take part in the university competitions organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association. PEN State belongs to division Big Ten Conference.
The most famous team of Nittany Lions is that of American football which was national champion in 1982 and 1986. John Cappelletti moreover was honoured by a Heisman Trophy in 1973.
