Póvoa de Varzim

Póvoa de Varzim (unduly called Póvoa " sometimes; do" Varzim) is a municipality (in Portuguese: concelho or município ) portuguaise of the District of Oporto, itself located in the Northern area. Of a population estimated for the year 2005 at 65.882 inhabitants, Póvoa de Varzim is localized in an arenaceous coastal plain, surrounding the Cape of Saint-Andrew, halfway between the rivers of the Minho and the Douro.

The first populations settled there between 4.000 and 6.000 years behind, towards 900 before J. - C. " perturbations" in the area led to the foundation of a strengthened city. The place of the sea in the local economy was always of first order, firstly through maritime trade, secondly by the fishing, driving with the signature of a charter in 1308 and consequently to transform the city, at the 18th century, as a main port of fishing of the North of Portugal. Since the end of XIXe, the extension of the beaches allowed Póvoa de Varzim has to be turned like one of the tourist cities of the area.

Póvoa de Varzim is one of the rare zones of plays authorized in Portugal, and also has textile industries and food significant. Its rich culinary tradition, where the fish is very present, Marie has old traditions such as the use of symbols called Poveiras or Masseiras, heritage of the fisherman who travsersé the centuries. The city has three monuments " nationales" : the millenium Church of Saint-Pierre de Rates (one of the principal Romance monuments of Portugal), the Aqueduct of Santa Clara and the pilori of art manuélin of Póvoa de Varzim, built in 1514 E representing the emancipation municipal of the city.
