Pétrusse

The Pétrusse is a river of the Luxembourg which occurs with the junction of several streamings of sources located in the Dippecherbösch downstream from a peak timbered between Dippach and Mamer at an average altitude of 300 meters not far from the farm Beauforterhof.

This peak belongs to that and watershed between its own catchment area of the Mamer. After approximately 2700 meters it crosses the locality of Bertrange to move towards Helfent or it receives its first two affluents. After its crossing of Merl upstream of Hollerich its third and the last flow joined it.

Now it is engulfed in the deep valley which bears its name. This valley a depth of approximately 50 meters formed formerly part of natural defenses of the town of Luxembourg and its rocks in Grès of Luxembourg were dug and mined by the various occupying military European forces and in particular the French with Vauban in order to increase its possibilities of defense by the interior and the basement. The Casemate S which one can always visit in are an astonishing testimony.

Within the framework of these fortifications a lock was also built allowing the underwater setting of the valley to reduce the possibilities of invasion by the valley.

Thus it has here on the heights on its left the upper town or hurdy-gurdy city and on its right-hand side the Bourbon plate and the new districts of the Station (new compared to the year 1880 dates to which construction in the current avenue of Freedom started following the establishment of the station to the borders of the district of Bonnevoie).

In the suburb Gronn it is thrown in the the Alzette

Until 1933, Pétrusse was only one brook wild maintained evil, of which the bed by after partially was concreted, hydraulic measurement without positive effect on quality of the river. Meanwhile it was the subject of several interventions of renaturisation and its valley was transformed into public green area.

Its overall length is of 10,5 km and its uneven of 80 meters.

Its affluents are of upstream downstream:

  • Aalbaach (left bank)

  • Grouf (Right Bank)
  • Zeissengerbaach (Right Bank)
