Biography
He lived at the time of the large emperors like Claude and Néron. He was initially proconsul in Bithynie, then was named consul. Although this function had lost much of its importance then, it shows the influence which Pétrone enjoyed. Tacite already describes it like a man of pleasure, sleeping the day and being occupied with its business the night. He became then a friend of Néron. The good fortune of Pétrone caused jealousies. Tigellin, Prefect of the court, made it show to have taken part in the Conjuration of Rammer of 65. Pétrone was indeed a friend of Scævinus, one of entreated. Understanding that its fate was played, it sliced the veins in 66 during a last feast given to his friends, whereas it was with Cumes with the court. Before dying, it found time to write its will which it addressed to Néron, and which recapitulated the wrongs that it reproached the emperor.
This biography is largely hypothetical and it is of more possible than the author of Satyricon is another Petronius.
