Périgueux (in Occitan Periguers or Peireguers ) is a average city French, prefecture of the the Dordogne, one of the five departments which form the area Aquitaine. The river Isle crosses the city of is in west.
Its inhabitants is called Périgourdins or Pétrocoriens.
Its name comes from the Gallic tribe which lived the places at the time of Vésone: the Pétrocorii.
In 1669, the évêché passes from the Saint-Etienne ex-cathedral located in the district of the City at the cathedral Saint-Face.
In 1813, Périgueux increases with the fusion of the old commune of Saint Martin's day.
In 1857, Périgueux sees the arrival of the railroad coming from Coutras and with him the installation from the repair shops from the engines and the cars from the Compagnie from Paris-Orleans (PO), activity which survives still nowadays in the district of Toulon.
By its railway station, Périgueux is connected by connections FOR THE THIRD TIME to Bordeaux, Limoges, Brive, Agen and by train broad outlines with Paris, Lyon and Clermont-Ferrand by the Ventadour
The city laid out until March 2005 of an air link towards Paris at the beginning of Bassillac (15 km of Périgueux): airport of Bassillac-Périgueux.
Since 1970, Périgueux also accommodates in the industrial park of Boulazac to the periphery of the city the Imprimerie of the postage stamps and values fiduciary (ITVF) from which totality comes from the stamps emitted in France (4 billion stamps per annum). It employs 700 people.
Périgueux is the seat of the Chamber of commerce and industry of the Dordogne. It manages the Aéroport Périgueux-Bassillac and that of Bergerac-Roumanière, the Exhibition site of Périgord. It manages also the School of Savignac, the GEP, CFA, and the LEP.
