Périgueux (in Occitan Periguers or Peireguers ) is a average city French, prefecture of the the Dordogne, one of the five departments which form the area Aquitaine. The river Isle crosses the city of is in west.

Its inhabitants is called Périgourdins or Pétrocoriens.

Currency

Its currency is “Civum Fides Fortido Mea” (“the fidelity of my citizens makes my force”). The Blason of the city consists of three crenelated towers of which that central is surmounted by a Fleur of lily ( On sky of mouths and sinople ground, with the money castle of three notched towers, the surmounted power station of a gold lily).

History

Périgueux is born in 1240 from the union from two rival boroughs established to a few hundreds from meters one from the other: the City (the Gallo-Roman Vésone), city of the bishop and the count of Périgord and the middle-class city of Puy-Saint-Face.

Its name comes from the Gallic tribe which lived the places at the time of Vésone: the Pétrocorii.

In 1669, the évêché passes from the Saint-Etienne ex-cathedral located in the district of the City at the cathedral Saint-Face.

In 1813, Périgueux increases with the fusion of the old commune of Saint Martin's day.

In 1857, Périgueux sees the arrival of the railroad coming from Coutras and with him the installation from the repair shops from the engines and the cars from the Compagnie from Paris-Orleans (PO), activity which survives still nowadays in the district of Toulon.

Transport

Périgueux is connected to Bordeaux and Clermont-Ferrand by the highway A89. Only highway in France being integrated perfectly into the relief and the landscape.
