Pécs (in German Fünfkirchen , in Croatian Pečuh , Serb Pečuj gold Печуј , into Slovak Päťkostolie , Czech Pětikostelí , Turkish Peçuy ) is a Ville of Hungary. With a surface of 162.61 km ², it is about the fifth plus Hungarian big city. It counted 162.498 inhabitants in 2001.

In 1988, Pécs accommodated to it tenth edition of the festival Europa Cantat

Pécs was selected European Capitale of the culture 2010.

History

Following the annexation of the west of Hungary by the Roman Empire, the Romans founded the town of Sopianae . It became an important Christian city at the time of first half of the 4th century. The city was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. Charlemagne reconquered the city and to the Saint Germanic Roman Empire annexed it.

The name of Pécs appears in documents starting from 1235.

Louis Ier the Large one founds the first university of Hungary with Pécs in 1367, under the incentive of the chancellor of the king, who was also the mayor of the city.

After the defeat of Louis II with Mohács in 1526, Pécs is plundered and burned, then is reconquered by Ferdinand Ier in 1527.
