Pébrac

Pébrac is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Loire and the area Auvergne.

The commune of Pébrac extends from the valley of Desges to the plate of Margeride. At the end of the Middle Ages, about 1340, the company of the captain Louis d' Anjony tries to invest the village but the inhabitants push back it. Nevertheless, the mercenaries burn the neighborhoods of the village and the castle of Ganillon. Later, the stop of the relations between the abbey and its priories involves the decline of the village. In 1438, Armand de Flaghac allows to stop the crisis and rebuilt the abbey church and buildings, it founds the fairs and transforms the village by strengthening the high district. The village finds a certain prosperity thus. To the XVIII E century, the village, saturated, extends along a empierrée callade. Lastly, the industrial revolution of XIXième opens new horizons. The standard of living rises thanks to the offer of a remunerated work related to the coal mining, antimony then spar. The houses change and raise proudly carved lintels of door. In 1860, after the arrival of the railroad, the common one counts 5 schools and of many tradesmen. The war of 14-18 carries more than one forty young adults, which carries a fatal blow to this enthusiasm.

Romance Abbey , dominating the valley of Desges: monastery rested by Saint Pierre of Chavanon at the 11th century. It is the pope Urbain II, in visit with Brioude, which has " érigé" this monastery in abbey in 1095. The abbey was increased with 14th and 15th centuries. Chorus of 2 spans, vaults, armorié bell-tower, frontage with balcony out of wooden of 16th, capitals carved; treasure: embroidered silk cover (11th S.), cross (15th S.), chalice (17th S.), lectern (17th S.), etc

Personalities related to the commune

Saint Pierre of Chavanon : Born in Langeac about 1003, Pierre de Chavanon directed all young person towards priesthood. He withdrew himself in loneliness with Pébrac, where the bishop of Clermont committed it to found, about 1062, a monastery of regular canons which knew a great radiation. He died one September 8th about 1080.

Jean-Jacques Olier de Verneuil , founder of the order of Saint-Sulpice, was commendatory abbot this abbey of Pébrac at the 17th century.
