Päijänne

The lake Päijänne is a Finnish lake located in the area of Finland-Power station of the Finland-Western province of and in the area Päijät-Häme of the province of Finland-Southerner.

Geography

With 1 080,63 km2 of surface, the lake Päijänne are the second Finland Lake and the eighth of Europe. It is directed North-South, very lengthened (119 km in the biggest length), extending from Jyväskylä in north until proximity of Lahti in the south. In spite of its size, its depth is overall not very important (16,2 meters on average) except for a zone limited to the North of the lake with 95,3 meters to the maximum, which makes of it the Finnish lake deepest. It is emptied by the Kymijoki which crosses a breach in the Salpausselkä.

Historically, it a long time constituted a major transportation route in central Finland, channels connecting it to the close lakes. The accesses of the lake are industrialized little. Water, of very a good quality, is pumped and transported by an immense underground tunnel, the Aqueduc of Päijänne, for the requirements in Fresh water for the area for Helsinki.

It is bordered by the municipalities of Asikkala, Jyväskylä, Jyväskylän maalaiskunta, Korpilahti, Kuhmoinen, Leivonmäki, Luhanka, Jämsä, Muurame, Padasjoki, Toivakka and Sysmä.

Some small islands of the Southern part of the lake form the National park of Päijänne.
