Oyonnax Rugby is a club of Rugby to XV French taking part in the Pro D2.
The Club
A little history
U.S. OYONNAX RUGBY: ALMOST A CENTENARY WHICH AGES WELLRugby and Oyonnax, it is a way traversed together of long time, since it is necessary to go back to 1909 to find trace of the foundation of a club of Rugby in annals of the city. And quickly, the small local club rested by Jules VERCHERE was going to one by one cross the levels which separated it from the national plan, to play there a part of importance between 1921 and 1931. That which one then called the C.S.O constituted a prize list of first order under the crook of the great figures of the time, of Charles MATHON in Georges ORFIDAN while passing through Louis LEVRAT, Leon PREVOST, Aimé JACQUIN, Cyrille PLATTIER, Pierre OCCLEPO, and others whose names crossed the generations of Red and Black Rugby (ADOBATI, CHAPELU, DRAPER…).
OYONNAX COMPETES WITH LARGEST
At that time, one took the practice to see the lawn of the Stage of the Future pressed by clubs as mythical as the Stade Toulousain, Montferrand, Castres, Toulon or Racing. The young Sporting Club Oyonnaxien went then, unification of the forces obliges to become in 1940 the Oyonnaxienne Sporting union. A name and initials which crossed the century and the country, with glorious phases succeeding others, more modest, under the crook of hundreds of players of which number still count among most faithful supporters of the team of today. A very strong bond that the Management Committee of the club perpetuates by inviting all these faithful glories regularly. And Sundays when they are put at the honor are as many moving days where the memories invade the capital and the platforms of the stage Charles MATHON.
THE TURN OF MODERNITY
One can say that U.S.Oyonnax entered the modern era of Rugby in 1967, while reaching laPremière Division, who then gathered 64 best Clubs of the country. Jubilation in the streets, parades in the convertibles: all the city resounded of the exploits of its rugbymen. Of a shy person claiming with the maintenance, the fifteen Red and Black were transformed quickly into challenger in the qualification, historical performance since it was necessary for fighting with adversaries as crested as Mont of Marsan, Bègles, Narbonne, Toulon, Castres, Montauban or Voulte. Came then the Seventies and Eighties, where intermingled the best, with several seasons in the Division 1, and worst, in the form of a passage by the hell of the third division… 1988 were the year of the end of the purgatory: the Reds and Blacks gained finally the right to join the first division, Groupe B, while being essential on Dijon vis-a-vis the U.S. Subway of Paris. The dream of a whole city, fruit of a realistic ambition, took finally reality, and the avenue Anatole France could become the theater of a new historical procession of the players to which it President CHAPELU had offered the elephants that he had promised. Patrick MANDUCHER joined it then and together they obtained the Cut of the Hope against Castrate into 1990/1991 and titrates it of Vice-Champion of France the following year. After the withdrawal of Maurice CHAPELU, Patrick MANDUCHER only continued in the Presidency, follow-up then of his brother Jean-Marc MANDUCHER in co-presidency with Gerard MACHURAT of 1994 to 1999 then with the support of Herve DAVID and Michel GERGONNE as vice-presidents since season 1999/2000. This period was going to see Oyonnax confirming its row with the more high level of the Amateur hierarchy through systematic qualifications at the time of the matches of final stages with unfortunately some failures for the matches of Rise.
But crowning was going finally to arrive for Jean-Marc MANDUCHER, Herve DAVID, Michel GERGONNE and U.S.Oyonnax Rugby with the Championship of Federal France 1 at the end of the season 2000/2001, and a place of finalist to the Challenge of the Hope.
In 2001/2002, U.S.Oyonnax Rugby was going to confirm its rise to power with the Title symbolic system of n° 1 of the 56 Clubs of Federal Division 1, after the qualificative phases (26 matches = 20 victories, 1 no one and 5 defeats), with a third victory in the same season against our neighbors of Borough in Bresse in 8th of finale, followed unfortunately defeat in ¼ of finale against Arras (26/33).
But the ambition Pro D2 of the Club was going to be concretized at the time of the season 2002/2003 where by the thanks of a victory over the score from 44 to 22 against Bourg in final Bresse in half of the Championship of France, U.S.Oyonnax Rugby reaches the second professional division of French Rugby: the PRO D2. It must be unfortunately inclined finally against Limoges on the score from 20 to 18.
It is the dedication for U.S.Oyonnax Rugby which reaches the Professional National league thus gathering 30 best French Clubs.
In accordance with the requirements of the LNR, SASP OYONNAX RUGBY is created on July 1st, 2006. She gathers forty shareholders faithful to US Oyonnax Rugby.

The stage Charles Mathon
WHO WAS CHARLES MATHON?
Born in 1905 in Oyonnax, Charles Mathon devoted the majority of his youth to the sport which it affectionnait so much: Rugby. It practiced this sport at the “Reds and Blacks” until the twenty years age before joining Bourg in Bresse. Its stay in our neighbors bressans was of short duration since it returned to make the beautiful days of Rugby Oyonnaxien two years after its departure. At this point in time it started its formidable career equips first with it where it met in particular another player of very great fame: Georges Orfidan. Charles Mathon finished his career by a reconversion with Rugby with XIII before perishing at the time of the second world war. In regard to its notoriety, the town of Oyonnax decided that the stage of the city of the plastics would bear its name.
THE STAGE CHARLES MATHON: ITS HISTORY
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the stage Charles Mathon belonged to the private ones which had founded “the company of encouragement to the sports”. It is only at the dawn of the second world war, on January 14th, 1939, that the stage was yielded to the oyonnaxienne municipality in the condition that it is firstly reserved for Rugby. In the enclosure, there then existed a tennis court as well as platforms out of wooden.
At that time, the town of Oyonnax comprised three clubs of Rugby: - the CSO: the Sporting Club Oyonnaxien - future of Oyonnax - the club of the working sports
In 1942, these three clubs amalgamated to form the USO: Oyonnaxienne sporting union, name which will cross the years until our days. With beginning of the year 50, the ground was rehabilitated and one created the platform known as “of the sandpaperers”. During the two years of work, the stage of the future, located at the place of current Valexpo, had become the provisional stronghold of the reds and blacks. The quality of the ground after this work did not give whole satisfaction: water did not run out and mud invaded the lawn regularly. Moreover, the city not having training grounds, the Mathon Stage accommodated not only the matches but also the training of all the oyonnaxiennes teams. Under the town hall of Mr. Emin, new work was completed with a not very convincing result. In 1983, Mr. Guichon, then mayor of Oyonnax, decided a total repair of the ground. A very powerful drainage was installed this time successfully. The club has since a lawn in excellent state.
CURRENT CHARACTERISTICS

The stage also includes/understands a Capital of 300 m2 which shelters Bodega where the meals after the matches are been useful.
We make a point here of thanking the town of Oyonnax, the Community of Commune who equipped the USO Rugby with equipment to the height of his ambitions.
