Oxygen treatment normobare

The oxygen treatment is the fact of bringing a supplement of Oxygène to a patient.

The Oxygène is the Comburant which makes it possible to release the energy contained in the nutrients, via the cellular Respiration. It is normally extracted from the Air by the lungs at the time of the ventilation, then is transported in the body by the Sang (fixed by the Hémoglobine contained in the red globules or Hématie S) to be distributed to the bodies.

The air contains 21  normally; % of oxygen. When a person suffers from certain affection, it can be necessary to bring a complement of dioxygene to him.

Oxygen treatment with low flow

Consist in adding a certain quantity of oxygen to the ambient air that the patient breathes spontaneously. It can be carried out with the means:

  • of a nasal nozzle (also called nasal glasses)
  • of a simple mask
  • of a mask without reinspiration with only one of valve.

Oxygen treatment with high banc

Consist in providing to the patient an air flow with a concentration increased of oxygen (from 21 to 100%) sufficiently large to entirely cover its ventilation/minute, in other words, so that it does not breathe of ambient air.

The principal devices used for this purpose are:

  • a mask with 100% with its two valves
  • a mask with ring of Venturi
  • a device with high moisture with ring of venturi
  • a croupette and pediatric hood
  • an artificial ventilator,…

Risks connected to oxygen treatment

Physical dangers

The managing personnel of oxygen must handle it while keeping in mind that:

  • oxygen being powerful a Combustive, it should be held far from any source of heat, flame, sparks,…
  • any demi-john of gas under pressure whose “head” would undergo a violent one shock is likely to be transformed into a dangerous projectile. It is thus imperative that the cylinders (or shell ) of oxygen are in any time attached to a wall or a support adequate or laid down in stable position , the head pointing towards nobody.

Side effects of oxygen treatment

  • a fraction inspired of oxygen too high is famous being potentially harmful for the patients reached of obstructive chronic Broncho-pneumopathie.

French legislation on medical oxygen

In France, medical oxygen has the statute of Médicament: the organization which it factory must have the statute of pharmaceutical laboratory, it must deposit a marketing authorization (BITTER) including/understanding, enter others, the description of packing (in fact the bottle).

This statute has, in practice, only one consequence for the secouristes  : it is not possible to make fill a bottle near a supplier (that would be compared to split sale, prohibited in France, and with illegal exercise of the Pharmacie). The bottle must thus be rented (it is in addition the only guarantee that the supplier has who packing is in conformity with the LAND-MARK).

On the other hand, it can be acquired without ordinance (it is registered on no restrictive list).
