Outgames world 2006

The world 1 Outgames , under the name Go Montreal 2006 , are a sporting and cultural event which took place with Montreal (Quebec, Canada) of the July 26th until the August 5th 2006.

First Outgames received more than 12.000 sporting participants (either more than with OJ of Athens in 2004) and nearly 250.000 tourists come from the outside of the city, or more the sporting great event to be held in the city since the XXIe Olympic Games of summer. 5.000 voluntary framed the event.

The 1 Outgames world occupied forty sites in Montreal (stages, parks, gymnasia, theaters) during seven days with the presentation of competitions in 35 disciplines.

History

The event has its origins in an argument following the decision to hold the 7es merry Jeux in Montreal. The Fédération of the merry Plays found that the plans suggested by the committee Montreal 2006 were disproportionate, in spite of the granting of financing by the three stages of government, and that the committee asked too much autonomy. It thus decided to hold the merry Plays with Chicago.

The organizers montréalais decided to hold its own plays nevertheless, finding a godfather at the European Federation of the sports for gays and lesbians (EGLSF), which organizes the Eurogames . The federation was interested in the behavior of an event of international scale. Together, the organizers and the federation created the sporting International association for merry and lesbians (SLIPPED), organization accréditatrice of Outgames.

Outgames world are the second great event multisports in Montreal since the XXI {{E}} Olympic Games of summer in 1976. They used installations having been used with the Olympic Games and the Championnats of the world as swimming 2005. Outgames world 2006 were of a scale higher than that of the merry Plays 2006 in quantity of events and participants and in budget.

International Conference

Outgames take place at the same time as the week montréalaise of merry Fierté Divers/Cité; the procession of the pride took place the shortly after the opening ceremonies.

Outstanding moments

The federal deputy of the district of Hochelaga, Réal Ménard gained the money medal in fight gréco-Roman in the category of 74 the 36 year old kilos and more. This money medal drew a vast media attention to Outgames.

Fence and opening ceremonies

The cultural program also included/understood the fence and opening ceremonies (on July 29th) (on August 5th), which include/understand services of the following artists: The opening ceremony of Outgames took place on July 29th, 2006 with the Olympic stadium of Montreal and televised by Radio-Canada. Mark Tewksbury and Martina Navrátilová read the Déclaration of Montreal. The three stages of government were represented, by Gerald Tremblay, mayor of Montreal, Line Beauchamp, Minister for the Culture of the Quebec, and Michael Fortier, Canadian minister of Public works. One of the reasons of this financial failure is a relative satisfying of the public to the sports events, as well as the number of tourists (especially American) low than envisaged, in particular because of the rise of the Canadian dollar and the recent behavior of a similar event, the Gay Jeux, with Chicago. However the Ville of Montreal affirms that the economic consequences of the event in tourist terms are enormous.
