Out To Lunch!
Out to Lunch! is the second album that Eric Dolphy recorded as a leader for Blue Note Records. He is regarded today as one of best the albums in the history of the label, but more generally of the Jazz avant-gardist of the Sixties.
The title of the first piece, Hat and Beard , is a reference to Thelonious Monk and comprises a famous rhythmic passage between Tony Williams and Bobby Hutcherson. Something Sweet, Something Tender comprises a remarkable duet between Richard Davis with the Contrebasse and Dolphy with the low Clarinette. The third composition, Gazzelloni , car its name of a famous flutist: Severino Gazzelloni . On the face B, one finds two long pieces for Alto saxophone: the piece titrates and Straight up and down , which is supposed to evoke titubement under the effect of alcohol.
Tony William had just been eighteen years old, and appears under the name of Anthony Williams on the album.
A few months after the recording of this album, Dolphy left for a European round with Charles Mingus. He died little of time afterwards, consequently with a coma due to his Diabète.
