Ourthe (department)

The Ourthe or Ourte was old a French department, named according to the river Ourthe.

One finds at the time the two orthographies Ourthe or Ourte . The modern orthography is Ourthe . The chief town was Liege. It corresponds roughly to the territory of one of the Provinces of Belgium, the Province of Liege, but extends more to the east than this one, therefore in the current Germany, until Schleiden and Kronenburg, more of the enclaves in the department of the the Saar (Schüller, Steffeln, Dhom).

The department was created on October 1st, 1795 (fastening of the Principauté of Liege in France) and was dissolved in 1814.
