The ouléma or uléma are the Théologien S of the Islam.

Etymology

In Arab (`âlim) means erudite. Its plural is which is read oulamâ' . The `alim is that which holds science (`ilm), word of the verbal root, to know . French thus uses Arab plural like a singular and adds a S in the plural.

Function of the `âlim

The `âlim is a scientist carrying out his research in the field of the Moslem tradition, the Sunna, but its knowledge can go well beyond theological knowledge. Generally independent of the secular capacity, he is the guard of the tradition and a man of reference.

In the Coran, Al `Alîm , that which knows all, is one of the 99 names of God.
