Ouette with russet-red head

The ouette with russet-red head ( Chloephaga rubidiceps ) belongs to the family of anatidés, it is a member of the group of the tadorninae.

Description

It measures between 45 and 50 cm, the head are russet-red, the neck, the chest, the belly and before back are white with fine black stripes. The wings are brown. The nozzle is black and the orange legs.

Habitat

This species lives the Ground of Fire and the islands Falkland. One meets it in the grassy plains and the meadows.

Biology

It is about a very gregarious species. The reproduction takes place about November, at that time the males are very aggressive and defend the nest savagely. The barnacle with russet-red head nourishes itself while grazing.

Populations

The population lies between 42.000 and 82.000 birds, the birds of Ground of Fire are threatened by the introduction of the Renard of Argentina ( Dusicyon griseus ).
