Ouette of Magellan
The ouette of Magellan ( Chloephaga picta ) is a related Anatidé with the Tadorninae.
Description
It measures between 60 and 65 cm. The male with the head, the neck and the chest white, the remainder of the body is gray with fine black bars on the sides. In the female, the head and the neck are russet-red, the wings grisâtres and the lower part of the body striated with black.
Habitat
She lives the south of the America south, Chile, Argentine, and islands Falkland. She attends mainly the grassy plains.
Biology
It is about a very gregarious species of which the troops can gather several thousands of birds. The couples are faithful, the reproduction takes place between September and November the nest being placed close to water. After the reproduction it migrates towards the north of the Chile and the Argentine.
Populations
The population lies between 240.000 and 1.300.000 birds. The ouette of Magellan is sometimes persecuted by the farmers because it competes with the sheep and the cows for the Pacage.
