Ouakam

Ouakam is one of the 19 common of district of the town of Dakar (Senegal).

The district is in the west of the capital, along the coast.

History

Ouakam is an old village lébou become residential suburbs of Dakar.

Located in seaside, the Mosque of the divinity was built by Mohamed Seyni Guèye.

The construction of a Monument of the African Rebirth is in project with Ouakam.

Geological physics

With the foot of the hills - the Udders - Ouakam has two beaches, from which one profits a vague exceptional line, known of all the Surf ers.

Population

At the time of the census of 2002, Ouakam counted 43.188 people, 4.002 concessions and 6.923 households. End 2007, according to the official estimates, the population would rise with 48.595 inhabitants.

Economy

Overhung by the Headlight of the Udders, Ouakam profits from a strategic site. At the time colonial the Senegalese Tirailleurs was involved there and today one finds there at the same time a camp of the Army, the National school of gendarmerie, the air base of the French Army BA 160 and air base sénégalaise.
