History
First written mention date of a document of the year 1059, written in Latin, following the ordinance of the king Heinrich IV (king and Germanic emperor) towards the Hezel bishop of Strasbourg, which quotes the " Otonis villa, quae dicitur Ottenroden" , it thus seems that a certain knight Oton or Otton, had settled in this region then wild and covered with forests (" Rode" in language high German). Others estimate that this name comes from Ot-Trott (cellar or storeroom of Oton). According to another assumption, Ottenroden would mean " auf DER roten Erde" (on the red ground).Ottrott was born in 1858 from fusion from two old communes: Ottrott-le-bas and Ottrott-le-haut. In remembering this event, the town hall, built in 1861, carries on its frontage the armorial bearings of the two common primitives. The first municipal council is elected on September 26th, 1858, and the first mayor of the new commune is Mr. Theodore de Dartein.
