Otton II of Gueldre

Otton II of Gueldre , known as Paralyzed the , born towards 1215, died the January 12th 1271, was count de Gueldre and of Zutphen of 1229 with 1271. It was wire of Gerard III, count de Gueldre and of Zutphen, and Marguerite of the Brabant.

He was a prince of the Holy roman Empire in the Netherlands. He was frequently implied in the local quarrels against the counts de Clèves and the bishops of Utrecht. Because of its possessions in Westphalia, it was also and frequently in war against the counts de Ravensberg and of Tecklenbourg and the bishops of Paderborn, Osnabrück and Münster.

In 1261, as a regent of Holland, during the minority of Florent V, and also because the regency of the Brabant was dispoté between the mother and the uncle of the duke, it had an eminent position in the Netherlands.

It founded several cities and granted the statute of city at other communities, inter alia Gueldre (1229), Goch (1230), Ruremonde (1231), Harderwijk (1231), Grave (1232), Emmerich (1233), Arnhem (1233), Doetinchem (1236), Doesburg (1237) and Wageningen (1263). Thus by the implatation of middle-class man and merchants, the area became prosperous, also favoured by the development of roads. That enriches the count, by the customs duties.

Otton II was buried in the monastery of Graefenthal.
