Otto Wilhelm von Struve

Attention not to confuse it with its grandson Otto Struve (1897 - 1963)

Otto Wilhelm von Struve (May 7th 1819 (April 25th in the Calendar Julien) with Dorpat, now Tartu in Estonia - April 14th 1905 with Karlsruhe in Germany) was a Russian Astronome of German ethnic origin . In Russian, its name is normally spelled Otto Vasil' evich Struve (ОттоВасильевичСтруве).

He was the son of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve and the grandfather of Otto Struve. He had two wire: Ludwig Struve (November 1st 1858 - November 4th 1920) - father of Otto Struve - and Hermann Struve (October 3rd 1854 - August 12th 1920).

He worked as assistant of his father and succeeded to him as director of the Observatoire of Pulkovo (until in 1889). In 1885 a glasses of 30 inches was installed in Pulkovo, largest of the world at the time. It continued work of his father by discovering double stars. It also observed the satellite S of Uranus and Neptune, and measured the rings of Saturn.

It obtained the Gold medal of Royal Astronomical Society in 1850.

The Astéroïde (768) Struveana was named in its honor like in that of Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve and of Hermann Struve.
