From 1227, the fortress of Ottensheim was in the possession of Babenberger.
In 1228, Ottensheim accepted from the Austrian duke Léopold VI Marktrecht, i.e. the right to be called Markt (village gone city), just as the right of toll and the customs duty. Until this date, only Linz and Enns had obtained the statute of market in High-Austria in 1210 and 1212. As from 1490, Ottensheim belonged to the principality “Östrreich ob der Enns”. With the Middle Ages, Ottensheim will have even a rampart with three doors Schmiedtor, Linzertor and Wassertor. In 1524, Niklas Rabenhaupt von Suche accepted Ottensheim like stronghold of king Ferdinand Ier and, in 1527, Rabenhaupt let transform the fortress into a château.
In its history, the commune was devastated twice by regiments gipsies with the Middle Ages, it was flooded a dozen time and it was devastated six times by the feu.
At the end of the Second world war the castle was used as housing for the refugees and, afterwards, it was occupied by the troops of Soviet occupation. Since 1955, the castle is private property.
Etymology
The name of Ottensheim is brought back to the old prefixes high-German “oten-” or “oto-” but also to the names of anybody like “Otuni” or “Otini”. All these prefixes come from a base form in old Germanic commun run: “AUDA”, which means “treasure”, “goods”, “richness”.
