Ottó Hermann

Ottó Hermann , born the June 27th 1835 in Breznóbánya in High-Hungary (today Brezno, Slovakia) and dead the December 27th 1914, is a Scientifique, Archéologue and politician Hungarian.

Biography

His/her father, doctor and former classmate of the ornithologist Salamon János Petényi (1799-1855), encourage his son to be interested in the Natural history. The Otto young person constitutes a collection of birds, preparing the skins itself. He begins these studies with Diósgyőr then goes to Vienna where he becomes draftsman then soldier. In 1864, it becomes preserving Natural history museum of Natural history of Kolozsvár (today Cluj, Romania). Starting from 1869, he is also the writer of a newspaper of opposition. In 1870, one invites it to Vienna at a station with the Natural history museum of the city but the Hungarian Company of Natural science offers a five year old to him purse to retain it in the country. It enters to the Hungarian National museum in 1875. In 1879, it is elected at the Parliament like representative of Szeged, then, in 1893, of Miskolc, under the label of the Party of independence. There remains faithful until its death to Lajos Kossuth, exiled with Turin, to which he returns several times visits. In 1903, it undertakes archaeological excavations in the caves of Bükk. He dies in 1913 of complications after being reversed by a cart.

Works

He is the author of very many works, in particular devoted to ornithology. He publishes moreover collections of poetries (of János Arany, Mihály Tompa and Sándor Petőfi), where he shows the love of the Hungarians for the birds.

He militates actively for the safeguarding of the birds. It is one of the large specialists in the Migration of the birds. He creates in 1893 and directs until his death the Hungarian Institute of ornithology which acts actively for environmental protection. As of 1885, Hermann, assisted by Kálmán Chernel (1822-1891) and his/her son István Chernel (1865-1922), undertakes to sensitize the public with the conservation of the insectivorous birds, in particular of the migrating species. It is with their initiative that is organized the 2nd international ornithological Congrès in 1891 of which one of the major topics is the conservation of the species.

One also owes him a certain number of other work, in particular on the Araignée S of Hungary.
