Othon Friesz
Achilles-Emile Othon Friesz , born the February 6th 1879 with the Harbor and dead the January 10th 1949 with Paris, is a painter French.
Wire of a captain whose dream was to be one day a large navigator, Othon Friesz was, with Georges Braque and Raoul Dufy, the pupil of Charles Lhuillier with the Council school of the Art schools of Le Havre. A purse enables him to enter to the École of the Art schools of Paris in 1897, but he prefers the frequentation of the Musée of Louvre to the lessons of the academic painter Leon Bonnat.
Initially influenced by the Impressionist , then by Van Gogh and Gauguin, some of its fabrics are gathered, with the Salon of autumn of 1905, with works of Matisse, Marquet and Manguin. The flat tints of bright colors and the nervousness of the drawing give the feeling to the spectator to penetrate in a “cage with the deer”. It is the beginning of the Fauvisme of which it will become one of the principal representatives.
At the summer 1906, with Directs, they make a stay with Antwerp, working on the same subjects, then, the following year, with the Estaque and Ciotat, transposing on their fabrics the light from the South. Of return to Paris, while Braque works out with Pablo Picasso which it has just met, the bases of the cubism, Friesz continues a naturalism influenced by Cézanne and carries out landscapes, dead natures and navy more traditional, while preserving its Fauvist period the energy of the feature and the taste affirmed for the strong color and contrasts.
In 1912, it opens its first workshop in Normandy then, of return to Paris in 1919, it starts to teach the Dessin. In 1937, it carries out the decoration of the Palais of Chaillot with Dufy.
Its tables are characterized by the dynamism from the forms and the depth from the composition. In addition to its paintings, it also produced a great number of Dessin S and Gravure S, especially of the Lithographie S.
Othon Friesz is buried with the Cimetière of Montparnasse in Paris. Jean Cortot was one its pupils.
