Oswaldo López Arellano

Oswaldo López Arellano , born with Danlí in 1921 and deceased in 1996, was an Honduran soldier , and was the president of the Honduras between 1963 and 1971 and between 1972 and 1975. Regarded as a dictator, it seized the power by the force twice.

López Arellano early begins its career in the army, reaching the rank of general after having been useful during one long period as a colonel. In 1957, it particpe briefly with the military Junta, at which elections put quickly fine. In October 1963, it seizes the power following a coup d'etat, ten days before the poll of the presidential elections. It accepts later new elections, gained in June 1971 by Ramón Ernesto Cruz Uclés. In December 1972, it takes again the capacity by a military coup d'etat.

In 1975, the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States reveals that the United Brands Company granted López Arellano a Pot-de-vin of 1.25 million dollars and a promise of 1.25 million additional, in exchange of reductions of the taxes to the export of the Banane S. This scandal, known in Honduras under the name of Banana-Spoils, puts an end to the marketing activities with United Brands. April 22nd, 1975, Oswaldo López Arellano is dislocated of its functions by a military coup d'etat carried out by one of its generals, Juan Alberto Melgar Castro.

López Arellano was in addition the owner of an airline company of Honduras, SAHSA (Servicio Aereo of Honduras SA).
