Ostensive definition

A ostensive definition is a Définition Pragmatique (which depends on the context) often visual which uses an example nonverbal to indicate an object. One uses this type of definition to characterize and insist on a certain part of the object, often a defect or a typical feature. This type of definition is usually employed to support a characteristic or to make pass an emotion or a sarcastic tonality (Couleurs, feelings,).

Colors:

  • for the clear green - one will say Pomme.
  • for the red - blood will be said.

One often defines the people compared to what they eat:

  • to designate the French - one will be able to say “ham-butter” (sandwich), the “frogs” (usually abroad), “the cheeses which puent” (puppets of Canal+), the rods.
  • to indicate the Asian ones - one will say the “rice bowls”.
  • to designate the Belgians - one will say the “chip horns”.
  • to designate the English - one will say the “rosbifs”.

Other examples:

  • to designate the women - one will say the “moulds”.
  • to designate a customer who orders a ham omelet - one will be able to say “the ham omelet” (the customer is compared so that he eats).

The ostensives definitions are usually utlisées in the spoken language. The object which can be indicated with the hand, the foot or the head, this type of definition is used in a natural way when certain words escape to us to indicate the object in question. A ostensive definition has a character symbolic system. The symbol replaces the real object.

The ostensives definitions commonly used are often ironic, pejorative or reducing. They are employed much in the caricatures of people or people.
