With the Middle Ages (as of the 10th century) Ostabat is an important locality because of the active passage of the pilgrims with Compostelle.
With crossed several ways of Saint-Jacques-of-Compostelle, was in the middle of a device toll collector. It there had in 1350, two hotels, two hospitals and of a score of inns and accepted up to five thousand pilgrims.

Set fire to during the wars of religion, Ostabat obtained Henri IV in 1607 the authorization to build markets and to hold a market as well as an annual fair, like “ main city of trade and passage of our known as Royaume of sovereign Navarre and Pais of Béarn ”.

The pilgrimage of Compostelle

On the Via Podiensis of the Pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle.

One comes from Saint-Palate, the next commune is Arros, and the hamlet of Utziat, its priory-hospital dedicated to Nicolas saint.

At the entry of the village the old house “Ospitalia” joined again with its hospital tradition in the shape of a lodging of stage.

The crossroads of “Gibraltar”

Where the three ways meet.

Also called crossroads of Saint-Saver, it is located in the col of the hills of Saint-Saver and Soyarce. The vault of Elizafio rises close to the carrefour.
Announced since August 2nd, 1964, by a stele of orientation overcome by a " Stele discoïdale " frequent in the Basque cemeteries. It is the supposed point of meeting of the three ways, the Via Turonensis by Garis, the Via Lemovicensis by Sauveterre, and the Via Podiensis by Navarrenx.

Admittedly, Aimery Picaud, in the Guide of the Pilgrim wrote that they joined " AD hostavallam " , become “in Ostabat”, Gascon name meaning forms valley of Hozta , at Jeanne Vielliard. Dr. Clément Urrutibéhéty, having studied the layout on the ground, precisely points out that " ad" with the value of " vers". Thus “towards Ostabat”. In the same way, the ways Aragonese and Navarrese meet " AD pontem regine " , “towards Puente Reina”, makes some a little before Obanos.

The jacquets of the vias Lemovicensis and Turonensis had already gathered with Sauveterre-with-Béarn. But the jacquets which had taken the Via Tolosane could gain a few kilometers by taking a secondary way since Lacommande, and by the Hospital-Saint-Blaise to join the crossroads of Gibraltar.

The name of “Gibraltar”, Xibaltarre in Basque, is a frequent Toponyme in Basque Country which indicates a place of camping of Gipsies come from Andalusia. Some see in this case a deformation of the Basque Salbatore “Saver”, sanctuary of Saint-Saver, without relationship thus with the džabal Al-Ṭāriq.
