Ossétie-of-south
The Republic of Ossétie-of-South [[ossète]: РеспубликæХуссарИрыстон ( Respublikæ Xussar Iryston ), in Russian: РеспубликаЮжнаяОсетия ( Respoublika Ioujnaïa Ossetia ) and in Géorgien: სამხრეთიოსეთი ( Samkhreti Osseti )] is the name of a separatist republic on the territory of the République of Georgia. This republic is not recognized by UNO. Its capital is Tskhinvali and its president is Edouard Kokoity (since the December 18th 2001).
Historically, the Ossétie-of-South had the statute of autonomous region in the the USSR, included in the territory of the Soviet socialist République of Georgia. Of a surface of 3900 km ², it was populated of 99 400 inhabitants.
Since the independence of Georgia with respect to the USSR the April 9th 1991, the autonomy granted to the Ossètes was removed by the State géorgien, causing the exodus of the population towards the republic of Ossétie of North.
In 1994, the nationalists proclaimed the independence of Ossétie of the South, benefitting from the weakness of the new State géorgien. This new State approached the Republic of Ossétie of North, one of the Republics of the Fédération of Russia, with which it has a common border, culture and economic relations.
Since the return of a nationalist capacity to Tbilissi in 2004, the Ossétie-of-South is an policy issue between the Georgian president Mikheil Saakachvili which wishes the rehabilitation of the areas secessionists within the territory of Georgia and the freedom fighters ossètes, majority in Ossétie-of-South, which wishes a complete independence. On its side the Federation of Russia, does not do anything to solve the situation, preferring to keep the status quo and thus to leave the capacity géorgien in the embarrassment, more especially as this one was combined with NATO. The freedom fighters of Ossétie of the South also wish a reunification with the Ossétie of North, but neither the Federation of Russia, nor SOEC and even less Georgia supports this solution.
The Republic of Ossétie-of-South held a second Référendum on its independence on November 12th, 2006 (the first referendum of 1992 was not recognized with the international level). A very vast majority of the voters seem to be itself marked for this independence. The government géorgien, the the United States and the European Union consider this referendum as illegal whereas the Russia recognizes it.
