Osoyoos

Osoyoos is a Canadian city of the Colombia-British located in the Vallée of Okanagan.

Situation

The town of Osoyoos is located in the valley of the Okanagan in Colombia-British, just in the north of the border of the state of Washington. Regarded as the only desert of Canada, Osoyoos profits from a microclimate exeptionnel. One often finds in the sandy small valleys of the rattlesnakes, the scorpions and the black widowed .

The Lake Osoyoos is hottest of Canada (approx. 24°C) and during the summer, it is often the hottest spot of Canada. In spite of the desert climate, the cultures are ensured by a good irrigation. Being the last city in the south of the Valley of Okanagan, a frontier station is open 24 hours per day to go in the state of Washington (Oroville).

Toponym

The name of the city draws its name from the indigenous tribe of Osoyoos which lives the area. Osoyoos means " Contracting of the eaux" in language autochotone of the réégion.

Economy

The cultivated grounds and the quasi tropical climate of the town of Osoyoos attracts each summer much number of Canadian-French. They constitute a good part of the labor of the farms. Mainly composed of cultivable grounds, one finds there mainly cherries, fishings, grapes (vineyards) and apples.
