Osirak

Osirak was the name of a Nuclear reactor experimental of 70 MW under installation in Iraq in the south-east of Baghdad, built by the France and dedicated to civil research on the nuclear power.

September 8th, 1975, the Lebanese newspaper El Oubsou El Arabi publishes a declaration of the Iraqi president Saddam Hussein: “ the agreement with France is the first concrete step towards the production of the atomic Arme Arab ”. November 18th, 1975, an agreement of nuclear cooperation free-Iraqi is signed with Baghdad (Iraq). The text specifies that it is about a peaceful use of the nuclear power.

The September 30th 1980, at the beginning of the War Iran-Iraq, two fighter-bombers F-4 Phantom Iran iens tackled with Missile S the research center of Tuwaitha to Baghdad but without touching directly the two engines Osiraq and Isis.

The engine was destroyed at the time of a Bombardement carried out by Israel which feared that Iraq does not reach the Nuclear weapon by 8 F-16 and 6 F-15 with 16 bombs of a ton, the June 7th 1981. It was the Opération Operated . French was killed in this raid.

The decision to equip Iraq with nuclear engineerings having been taken by the Prime Minister French with the time, Jacques Chirac, the engine is ironically called O Chirac by the Israelis and part of the French-speaking press.

Previously, the Mossad had destroyed in 1979, with the Seyne-sur-Mer (Var), part of the material which was intended there.

France finally declined the request for rebuilding of the engine in 1984 after having given an initial technical assistance.

In 1991, lasting Storm of the desert, several massive raids of F-117 and F-111 destroyed the complex which one of was strengthened of Iraq.
