the monastery of Ossios Loukas account among most beautiful Monastery S Byzantine of Greece. It is famous for its mosaic S at gold bottom of the XIe century, its Fresque S and the refinement of its decoration: marble pavements, Jasper and Porphyry.
Devoted to its founder, Holy Luc, a hermit of the Xe century (of which the skin can be seen in the crypt), the monastery of Osios Loukas is one of the most important medieval buildings of Greece. It was built in 1011 on the foundations of a church built in 944. The octagonal plan of its principal church became a reference for the Byzantine Architecture late.
Under the Ottoman Empire, Osios Loukas was the site of an important battle, to which the guns exposed in the court testify.
In 1821, the Isaias bishop declared there his support for the cause of national independence.
The monastery is still served by some Moine S orthodoxe. It is classified with the World heritage UNESCO with the Monastères of Daphni and Nea Moni de Chios.
