The Oscar of the best realizer is an allotted cinematographic reward each year by the Academy off Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It rewards work for setting in scene of that which is judged by the academy being the best realizer of the past year. The prize winner is distinguished for one from his films in particular. He is gratifié of a statuette and has the right to speak at the time of the ceremony.

By all the Oscars of the best realizer (78 in 2006), 21 were not accompanied by the Oscar by the best film. One counts only some works which were rewarded by the Oscar for the best film without their realizer being named beforehand for their setting in scene, like Miss Daisy and his driver in 1990. Contrary, to find scenario writers crowned for their realization without their work not having concourru under " better film" , it is necessary to go back to the beginning of the history of the demonstration, with personalities such as Lewis Milestone and Frank Lloyd.

The Academy selects a Réalisateur gaining among five personalities named as a preliminary each year since 1927. The polemic moreover more often made to rage concerning the omission, in the prize lists, of Martin Scorsese, major American director, who will have had to wait until nothing less arrives than its sixth nomination to gain the invaluable statuette in 2007 (for Infiltrated the ).

No woman received this price for the moment. Three of them were named: Jane Campion, Sofia Coppola and Lina Wertmuller .

John Ford is for the moment the realizer having gained the most Oscar of the best realizer with four trophies, follow-up of Frank Capra and William Wyler which gained each one three statuettes. Wyler also obtains the record of nominations for this distinction (twelve on the whole).

Six personalities were named at the same time as a better actor and better realizer for the same film but anybody still did not succeed doubled. Among the realizer-actors preceded for their setting in scene and not for their interpretation, one counts: Woody Allen ( Annie Hall ), Warren Beatty ( Reds ), Kevin Costner ( Dance with the wolves ), and Clint Eastwood ( Pitiless and Million Dollar Baby ). Laurence Olivier (for Hamlet ) and Roberto Benigni (for the Life is beautiful ), as for them, was crowned as actors and not as directors.
