Oscar Manutahi Temaru is a politician tahitien (born on November 1st 1944 in the commune of Faaʻa on the island of Tahiti in French Polynésie), residing in French Polynesia. Reprocessed French Customs, he is president of the archipelago for the third time in three years, since September 13rd, 2007.

Biography

Born with Faaʻa in a modest family, of a father tahitien and a mother originating in Atiu (islands Cook), it follows a normal school course.

In 1960, then 16 years old, it engages in the National marine and is found one year later in Algérie. He declares that his stay in Algeria, then in full war strongly marks it, in particular the behavior of certain soldiers and civilians French with respect to the Algerians of stock.

In 1972, of return to Tahiti, it engages in the customs.

He is mayor of Faaʻa, the most populated Polynesian communes, since 1983.

Transitory president of the French Polynesia from May to October 2004, it is re-elected the March 3rd 2005 after the victory of a union including/understanding several parties (of which it his) with the bys-election of February 13rd, 2005 at the assembly of Polynesia. The December 13rd 2006, a motion of censure, moved by volontée of its political adversaries to find the capacity, reverses its government, which puts an end to its presidency. He is re-elected with the presidency of French Polynesia on September 13rd, 2007.

Beginning in policy

After being itself presented to the municipal elections of Faaʻa, elections which it loses, it decides to create its political own party to defend its own ideas. Thus the April 20th 1977, the Front of release of Polynesia is created. This party is before any freedom fighter.

In 1983, it decides to change the name of its party, it will be henceforth Tavini Huira' will atira No you Ao Ma' ohi (To serve the people of the country ma' ohi), represented by a flag blue-white-blue with in its center five stars of color gold pointing out the five archipelagoes of French Polynesia.

After several elections with the nearly unimportant results for the party of Oscar Temaru, it reaches the March 13rd 1983 the seat of Maire of the town of Faaʻa. It makes remove the French flag and the bust of Marianne at the time of its oath of nomination.

Since 1984, year when Gaston Flosse, founder of the Gathering of the people ('' Tahoera' has Huiraatira ''), becomes president of the government of the territory, these two men become the opposite figures of the Polynesian political scene. Political adversaries on the public place, they maintain nevertheless in the private life a cordial relation. Whereas, election after election, the party of Oscar Temaru gains points by crystallizing the vote of the opponents with Gaston Flosse, this one remains indétrônable of its seat of president.

When in 1995, Jacques Chirac decides to take again last once the nuclear tests with Moruroa, Oscar Temaru seizes the appropriateness of the demonstrations against the tests to occupy the front of the scene.

In 1996, it decides to change its message of independence. Up to that point, he wanted an independence total and an immediate withdrawal of France. Its message changes, to accept a progressive independence. About the same time, Gaston Flosse leans more and more towards an increased autonomy of French Polynesia.

The policy of Gaston Flosse is criticized more and more and the party of Oscar Temaru combined with various left establishments (not all freedom fighters), gains voice more and more. Oscar Temaru then launches a new slogan, the change ( Taui ). This change wants to be to be that which must be made with the head of the presidency of the territory in agreement with the socialist party and various independence formations, ecologists and of lefts.

Presidency

With the general surprise, it gains the elections of the May 23rd where it is with the head of a list of alliance, the Union for the democracy (UPLD), which gathers several parties linked against Gaston Flosse.
