Oscar Levi Strauss

Oscar Levi Strauss (February 26th 1829 - September 26th 1902) is a Juif Bavarian inventive of the Blue-jeans.

Biography

Levi Strauss had as a name of birth Löb Strauss. It was born with Buttenheim, in Bavaria. (Germany)

In 1847, Strauss, his/her mother and her two sisters move with New York to join her brothers, Jonas and Louis, who worked in the Textile.

In 1850, it adopts the name " Levi Strauss" and in 1853, he becomes American citizen. He moves with San Francisco, in California, and opens a trade of sale of textile which he sells with small stores in California. The company " Levi Strauss and Co.. " is founded.

Strauss notices that the clothing worn by the prospectors of Or does not support the torture inflicted by the work of digging in the galleries, dirtiness and the filth.

Strauss develops and sells then the concept of pants of durable fabric (the Jeans). At the beginning, these pants are not very comfortable to carry, but they last really a long time. Later, Strauss discovers the " Denim " (a Cotton manufactured with Nimes in the south of the France) and a clothing much more popular and comfortable produces.

In 1866, the head office of Levi Strauss and Co. is installed in 14-16 Battery Street, where it remains during 40 years.

In 1872, Jacob Davis, tailor of Reno in the Nevada, written in Levi Strauss for him to speak about a process which he invented to rivet the corners of the pockets on the men's trouserses. He proposes to patent the joint process.

In 1874, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis obtain the patent for the rivets on the men's trouserses; from this invention will be born the Levi's 501.

September 26th 1902, Levi Strauss dies at the 73 years age. Its four nephews inherit the company.
