Oscar Bardi de Fourtou

Marie, Francois, Oscar Bardi de Fourtou (1836 - 1897) is a French statesman, principal craftsman of the attempt to prevent the republicans from returning to the capacity after the constutionnelle crisis of May 16th, 1877. He enjoys a bad reputation when he leaves his ministry for the interior in November 1877. He enters the history like civil servant of a dedicated, authoritative State and definitively associated with the failure of the conservatives. The judgment of its contemporaries and the historiography which is attached to it are without call for this minister périgourdin. Belonging to a middle-class family of Ribéracois (the Dordogne), he is the son of a lawyer. Junior by three children, it receives a solid formation with the college of Ribérac then to the college of Périgueux before passing his license in right. He enters in his turn the legal career in 1857, then becomes Justice of the Peace in 1860-61 and sustitut of the imperial prosecutor in 1864.

Widower very early, it remarie in 1863 with Alix Dereix and has six children: four wire and two girls. Its political career really starts with the fall of the Empire, not without to have been during five years (1865-1870) mayor of its birthplace. Man of qualities and presenting a certain direction of the State, elected official 4th of the preserving list périgourdine in 1871, it is very quickly noticed by Adolphe Thiers which it calls it on December 7th at the post of minister of Public works, then becomes the May 19th 1873 the transitory minister of religion, since it follows Thiers in his fall.

The May 23rd 1874, it replaces the duke Albert de Broglie with the ministry for the interior. Pierre Magne, then Minister for Finance gives his resignation and by solidarity with his/her colleague périgourdin, Fourtou resigns the next on July 19th. Voter the constitutional Laws of 1875, it is re-elected appointed of the Dordogne in February 1876.

The May 18th 1877, it obtains again the station of Minister of Interior Department with a very delicate mission: to prevent the republicans from returning in force to the Parliament. Consolidated in its seat of Appointed the next on October 14th, its election is invalidated the November 18th 1878. Caused by Gambetta with the Parliament, it fights in duel with him a few days later. The doors of the senate open in front of him in 1880, but are closed again in 1885. It is represented then with legislative but it is still a failure. The wave boulangist profits to him and it finds its seat of deputy in 1889. Patient, it does not request a second mandate in 1893. He did not have time to benefit from his retirement and dies in Paris the December 6th 1897.
