Oscar (fish)

The Oscar ( Astronotus ocellatus ) is a Poisson of the family of the cichlidés .

Origin

Originating in South America, its medium of life extends from the Peru to the Brésil. One finds it mainly in water with weak current, in the middle of the branches and of the tree trunks fallen to water.

Description

It is a large fish which can reach up to 30 cm at the adulthood (and even a little more). One distinguishes it in particular by his enormous mouth and his Ocelle on the caudal stalk, that the same one at the origin of the name ocellatus . In a natural state its sides are generally of brown with black, haloed zones orange red. However, the forms of breedings generally see these zones are étendrent sometimes uniformly on almost all the body. Moreover, there exist albino forms, of a white ivory and whose sides are coppered.

The life expectancy exceeds the ten years under good conditions.

Maintenance

This fish, of big size, requires a consequent Aquarium logically. The maintenance of 5-6 subjects must take place in a Aquarium of approximately 600 liters, although a formed couple can be maintained in a less space.

The aquarium must be arranged roots and stones. The whole must be firmly fixed and well arranged, because the Oscar can prove to be a genuine bulldozer. This is why the too fragile plants, will be generally abused, to see torn off.

This fish being relatively resistant, the physicochemical parameters of water have only little importance. In spite of its size, this Cichlidé is rather calm and peaceful, and, apart from the not paired subjects at which the cohabitation can prove to be problematic in a too small space the Oscar will not pose a real problem. Attention, however, because of its food mode and of its large appetite, any fish whose size is lower than the mouth of the Oscar will be registered on its menu. Its food will be containing thin fish, shrimps, moulds, etc, the whole in great quantity.

Reproduction

A harmonious couple for the reproduction can be maintained in an aquarium of approximately 300 liters. The Oscar is laying on substrate discovered (several hundreds of eggs), and the two parents will look after and keep the small units. The young people have a black dress and silver plated and will nourish same food as the parents, since they are sufficiently small to be swallowed.
