Orylag
----
Nom Latin: Oryctolagus cuniculus orylag - Another name: Rex of Poitou.
----
Registered trademark in 1989, Orylag ® is a Lapin domesticates born French scientific research on the race rabbit Rex as from 1979 and which was improved during long years by INRA of Toulouse then by the INRA of Poitou-Charentes in order to obtain an exploitable rabbit at the same time for its fur and its meat of luxury. It is developed in partnership with the stockbreeders of Charente-Maritime.
Nomenclature and systematic
Small Mammalian domestic, about the lagomorph S and of the family of the léporidé S, it is a variety of rabbit carrying the gene " Rex". Orylag comes from the contraction of the Latin name of rabbit: Oryctolagus cuniculus . the researchers of the INRA, in particular Jean-Louis Twist drill, deceased today, developed an animal whose fur but also meat would be marketed with the ray luxury item. This long work of selection and genetic improvement made it possible to constitute a true stock, the Oryctolagus cuniculus orylag . It is also called Rex of Poitou ® in gastronomy.
Morphology
Orylag is a rabbit resulting from a genetic mutation which, as the rabbit rex from which it is resulting, has only Duvet, i.e. the finest hairs of the animal kingdom (15 micrometers), of an exceptional density - 8.000 to 10.000 per square centimeter. It homogeneous and is provided throughout the year. Two basic colors: brown chatoyant, known as " castor" , and a moucheté gray, said " chinchilla" , to which the " was added then; cendré". The scientific research tends to obtain a perfect fur and a leather while preserving the higher quality of the Chair supported by the privileged conditions of the breeding (INRA, 2002).See also: Lapin domesticates
Breeding and ethics
The orylag, or Rex of Poitou, tries to reconcile ethical breeding and .- the rabbits are high up to 18 weeks, that is to say the double of a standard rabbit.
- They are not sacrificed unnecessarily only for their skin, contrary to the majority of the animals with fur.
- They profit from privileged living conditions in order to preserve an impeccable fur to them all while fattening them at point, contrary to the majority of the animals with meat.
A breeding in partnership
The INRA and of the stockbreeders wishes to control all the die to maintain a quality of meat and irreproachable fur. Are approved 3 or 4 new stockbreeders only per annum.-
1990 : The first breedings are established in Brittany, but without success.
- 1992: four or five breedings of Orylag are born in Charente-Maritime with the assistance of the room of agriculture.
to be a stockbreeder of Orylag :
- is woven to make wire or fabric: the orylactus.
Future of Orylag
This fur represents an advantageous substitute with the fur of the chinchilla : Rodent of South America, the chinchilla was massacred until almost total disappearance in the Cordillière of the Andes and still continues to be high and sacrificed for its skin which is however smaller, less solid and very expensive. The orylag ®, rabbit of breeding, are intended to be sacrificed one day for its flesh, it can contribute to save the life of the chinchillas as long as the use of the animal fur will be authorized.

Progression of the sales :
- 4000 skins sold in 1992, nearly 80.000 skins sold in 2001, the production approaches the 100.000 skins per annum (INRA, 2006).
- 120.000 kilos of meat sold to the large restorers in 2004.
Since 2004, vis-a-vis its success, the INRA of Poitou-Charentes tries to cross Orylag of the beaver type with rabbit of race satin to still improve quality of its fur (INRA, 2004).
The breeding of these rabbits ensures the maintenance of an agricultural activity in an area undergoing a Rural migration and results in a complementary income for the stockbreeders, the valorization of this research having allowed the creation of forty Emploi S.
