The orthodoxe institute of theology of Halki is an establishment of higher education intended for the theological formation of the orthodoxe clergy located on the island of Heybeli (Halki) in the Marmara Sea, close to the town of Istanbul, in Turkey.

It depends on the oecumenical Patriarcat of Constantinople.

The patriarchate wishes to reopen it in order to ensure its perenniality (the agreements with the expect Turkish government that only citizens Turkish having been formed in Turkey can be named Patriarches), but saw itself refusing this application. This reopening is registered among the many points under discussion around the accession of Turkey to the European Union.

History

Created in 1844, it was closed by the Turkish authorities in 1971.
