Orsay (to pronounce //) is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne and the area Île-de-France. It is the Chef-lieu canton.

Its inhabitants is the Orcéens .

Geography

Orsay is located in the natural area Hurepoix, in the valley the Yvette so called Vallée de Chevreuse on a ground sandy and Argile ux which one extracted from the stones Meulière S and the sandstone. It occupies a surface of 776 hectares in a rectangle of 2,9 kilometers length and 4,6 kilometers broad, between the valley and the plates of Saclay and Courtabœuf, including 95 hectares of green areas, 399 hectares of construction, 247 hectares of agricultural spaces. On the plate of Saclay the brook of Corbeville, channeled in drains to the pond of Saclay runs. Six Footbridge S, seven Bridge S of which one for RN 118 and a Viaduc for the Ligne B of the RER of Ile-de-France make it possible to cross the Yvette.

The commune was crossed by the old railway line Paris-Chartres State which became RN 188. A Viaduc allows its passage the top of the commune.     Toponymy

    The name of Orsay would come from the owner of a Roman Villa named Orcius . In 1080, the name Orceacum appeared, then Villula Orceacus at the 11th century, Orcei at the 12th century, Orceiacus at the 13th century then Ourcet and Orsay.

    History

    The city was originally named " Ourcet". In 754, the king Pépin the Brief gave the territory of the commune to the Abbaye of Saint-Germain-of-Meadows, in 999, the name of the village was mentioned in a manuscript of monk Benedictine reporting a battle between the count de Corbeil and the count de Blois in the plain. In 1080, from share the bishop of Paris Godfrey of Boulogne, the territory was allocated to the monks of Longpont who started in 1089 then in 1151 the construction of the church Saint Martin and of a Léproserie.

    In 1424, the castle-extremely was taken by the English.     Orsay is the Chef-lieu Canton of Orsay in the Arrondissement of Palaiseau represented by the General adviser David Ros (PS). It is attached to the 5 {{E}} district of the Essonne represented by the Député and regional adviser Pierre Lasbordes (UMP). 32 elected officials sit at the Municipal council distributed between the majority (UMP) and the minority elected officials PC, MRC, PS and the Greens, its current Maire is Mrs. Marie-Helene Aubry (UMP). In 2006, the commune had a budget of 36.700.000 €, of 930 social housing (either 24% of the park of dwelling). SupOptique has buildings on the commune, just like Supélec.

    The commune accommodates on its territory the Hospital of Orsay inaugurated in 1836, of a capacity of 431 beds, with dedicated services in General medicine, Cardiologie, Gastro-entérologie, Hépatologie, Neurologie, Chirurgie, Pédiatrie and Néonatalogie, Gynécologie and Obstétrique, Psychiatrie.
