Oromocto is a city of the Comté of Sunbury, located at the south of the New Brunswick, with the Canada.

Geography

The city is located on banks of the Fleuve Midsummer's Day, with the mouth of the river " Oromocto" , from where its name which means " Water profonde" in malécite (wel-a-mook'-took), because it was favourable with canoeing.

History

Following the example all area of the River Midsummer's Day, the first inhabitants were the Malécites, pertaining to the family algonquienne.

Towards the end of the XVIIème century, the French found a small establishment which will be destroyed in 1758 by the sergeant-general Monckton and its militia at the time of search operations which transfer the expulsion of the Acadiens of the valley of the Fleuve Midsummer's Day.

A strong British, strong Hughes, was built in 1776 in order to protect the pioneers from a possible American invasion which finally did not take place.

Following the opening of base BFC Gagetown in 1955, the city had to increase to meet the needs for the soldiers and a general plan of zoning was established, making of Oromocto the " city models of Canada".

Demography

There were 8.402 inhabitants in 2006 against 9.194 in 1996, that is to say a fall of 8,6% in 10 years.

Administration

The Mairesse is Fay L. Tidd and the city council men are Diane Buchanan, Paula Den Hollander, Allison Mockler, Melvin Vance and Gregory Doucet.

Culture

The museum of military base BFC Gagetown makes it possible to discover the history and the inheritance soldiers of New Brunswick since 1800, as well as many facets of the Canadian army.

Economy

Oromocto was an important shipyard at the XIXème century thanks to the sawlog sawmills of its back-country, but entered then declining.

It is only in 1955 that the local economy found its strength following the opening of the BFC Gagetown, one of greatest military bases of Canada, which is the largest employer of the city.

Oromocto has the following schools:
  • Rainbow , French-speaking school acceuillant the pupils of the nursery school at the 8th year. Dependant on the school district 1.
