The Oromia , or Oromie ( Oromiyaa in Afan oromo) is one of nine ethnic divisions (Kililoch) of the Ethiopia. From a surface of 353.632 km ², this zone extends from the east in the south-west of the country, by making greatest division in term of population like territory. Oromie included of the old provinces of Basle, Hararghe, Illubabor, Kaffa, Shewa and Welega. Its chief town is Adama (also known under its old name of Nazareth, or Nazret) and other towns of importance are Debre Zeit, Dembidolo, Jimma, Nekemte and Shashamané.
The Exchange Statistics Agency (Ethiopian Agency of the Statistics) estimates its population at 26.553.000 inhabitants. Those, 86,7% live an rural area. The population density is at 75,22 hab. /km ². One estimates that 44,3% of the inhabitants of Oromie are Moslem, 41,3% are Christian and the remainder adheres to a traditional religion. The ethnicities of importance are the Gallas (85%), the Amharas (9,1%) and the Gurages (1,3%). The Afan oromo, official language written with the Latin alphabet, is the native tongue of 83,5% of the population. The Amharique, official language of the Ethiopia, accounts for 11%.
