Ormstown
Ormstown is a municipality in the regional Municipalité of county of the High-Saint-Laurent to the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Montérégie.
The municipality such as it east is the result of fusion with the municipality of parish of Saint-Malachie-in Ormstown the January 26th 2000 and, so the inhabitants kept the name of St-Malachiens.
Origin of the name
The name Ormstown does not have a concrete origin. The territory of the current municipality belonged to the seigniory of Beauharnois directed then by Charles de Beauharnois. Thereafter, the territory passed to the hands of Alexander Ellice (1743-1805) in 1795. However, no child of Ellice named Orms. At this point in time the assumption according to which the name would be of American origin appears, because there exists a place called Ormiston Corners in the State of New York. Moreover, since the area was populated by the people come from Scotland and Ireland and that Ormiston is a patronym in these two fatherlands. It also should be added that there exists a locality of the name of Ormiston in the south-east of Edinburgh.The place already bore the name of Durham , towards 1860, without any recognized reason.
Ormstown and the brick
During the XIXe century, Ormstown counted seven companies specialized in the manufacture of brick. These many industries conferred the title of Québécois center of the industry of brick.
